AKC and UKC classify breeds into "groups" by their original purpose.
Northern or Spitz types may eventually be sub-divided.
Explore the Group descriptions below, or choose from the
menu bar above to decide which breed best fits your
lifestyle and interests. If you already know just which breed you prefer, use the drop-down
list of all breeds!

The Bullmastiff is a descendant of the bulldog and the imposing Mastiff.  His job was to apprehend and discourage poachers but he has diligently protected American families since the early 30s.  Developed in England, the Bullmastiff has great strength and even snoozing, he’s alert to any problem and ready to discourage intruders.

Bullmastiff Coat, Color, Care: The coat is short and dense, and layers of muscle keep him warm in cold weather.  Bullmastiffs require no trimming or special care or than wiping the mouth which drools when he’s excited or hot.  He is otherwise, a do-it-yourself grooming pleasure.

Bullmastiff Personality: He’s bold, faithful, and willing to please.  Alert but docile, he is always vigilant but should never be aggressive.  The Bullmastiff is good with bigger children (due to his size), small (agile) animals and other placid dogs.  He is a calm, reliable family companion and protector.

Exercise Requirements: Bullmastiffs are big, strong, and require regular outdoor exercise to keep that impressive muscle tone.  Invent a few chores to keep his mind active or he will invent them himself.  A fenced yard will suffice but the Bullmastiff will do better if jogging alongside your bicycle.  Stretching his strong legs every day will prevent nervous habits such as barking, chewing or licking.

Health Concerns: Health Concerns: Hip dysplasia and luxating patellas (knees) are common with large, fast growing breeds (like the Bullmastiff) but can be modified by diet and proper exercise.  Eye problems (entropion, ectropion, PRA) and other disorders are considered hereditary and puppies should be from cleared parents.  Allergies, itching, or thyroid imbalance is most often the result of environmental factors, including medication side effects.  A partially home-cooked diet free of preservatives, dyes, and chemicals, supplemented with vitamins and fish oils may prevent or correct such disorders.
