AKC and UKC classify breeds into "groups" by their original purpose.
Northern or Spitz types may eventually be sub-divided.
Explore the Group descriptions below, or choose from the
menu bar above to decide which breed best fits your
lifestyle and interests. If you already know just which breed you prefer, use the drop-down
list of all breeds!

Sporting Breeds

Bird dogs hunt and retrieve by scent and sight

Spaniel or Pointer,
Flusher or Setter,
Sporting dogs are
the hunter's go-getter!

Scent and Sight hounds hunt feather or fur

By day or by night,
to tree or to ground,
there's nothing so sweet
as the voice of a hound.

Working Dogs

Service work, police, draft, and protection dogs

Watchman at night,
companion by day,
he does your bidding
at work or at play

Courageous hunters and faithful friends

No fear, no pain,
no game's too rough,
a working terrier
is dog enough!

Toy Breeds

Diminutive, delightful and utterly devoted

A Toy is a toy, a
companion and more,
a treasure, a joy,
and a dog to adore

Utility dogs are multi-purpose, companions

No look-alikes here,
but tricks they can do.
Your very best friend
is rugged and true.

Herding Dogs

Pastoral breeds protect and control stock

They move, gather
and faithfully guard
cattle and sheep and
the kids in the yard.

Miscellaneous/Rare Breeds

Often foreign or newly developed

Shower me not
with gems so rare,
give me instead,
a diamond with hair

They are types or species more than "breeds"

Old as the dingo,
wild as the wind,
wise as coyote,
Man's very best friend

American Staffordshire Terrier Breed Information
The American Staffordshire Terrier averages 18” of pure muscle wrapped in a close, glossy coat. The Amstaff is called a pit bull terrier in UKC but is very different from the dogs used in that dirty sport. The purebred Amstaff is raised with love and he reciprocates.

The American Staffordshire Terrier resembles the original 1800s English bulldog and is descended from the old Staffordshire and white English terrier.  He has a bark to match his physique but the pit bull is usually quiet. With strong head set off by pronounced cheek muscles, he is a powerful deterrent to an intruder but greets family with a wagging low set, undocked tail.

American Staffordshire Terrier Coat, Color, Care: This big terrier has high set cropped ears and a short, smooth, easy-care dark coat which can be accented by modest white markings. He’s an impressive, athletic package.

American Staffordshire Terrier Personality: Pulling equally from his bulldog and terrier ancestry, the AmStaff or “pit bull” is animated but good natured and tolerant. His courage is proverbial and for that reason, he may not get along with other dogs who might foolishly challenge him.

Exercise Requirements: American Staffordshire Terrier is a superb canine athlete and should not be forced into inactivity.  Mental and physical stimulation is important for every breed but to confine this dog would be like never allowing a race horse to stretch his legs.  Jogging beside a bicycle or even on a treadmill will keep him happy and fit and prevent nervous habits such as pacing, chewing or licking.

Health Concerns: Hip dysplasia is not uncommon with large, fast growing breeds but can be modified by diet and proper exercise.  The American Staffordshire Terrier is long-lived and heals quickly but has sensitive skin.  Allergies, itching, or thyroid imbalance is most often the result of environmental factors, including medication side effects.  A partially home-cooked diet free of preservatives, dyes, and chemicals, supplemented with vitamins and fish oils may prevent or correct such disorders.
