AKC and UKC classify breeds into "groups" by their original purpose.
Northern or Spitz types may eventually be sub-divided.
Explore the Group descriptions below, or choose from the
menu bar above to decide which breed best fits your
lifestyle and interests. If you already know just which breed you prefer, use the drop-down
list of all breeds!

Sporting Breeds

Bird dogs hunt and retrieve by scent and sight

Spaniel or Pointer,
Flusher or Setter,
Sporting dogs are
the hunter's go-getter!

Hounds

Scent and Sight hounds hunt feather or fur

By day or by night,
to tree or to ground,
there's nothing so sweet
as the voice of a hound.

Working Dogs

Service work, police, draft, and protection dogs

Watchman at night,
companion by day,
he does your bidding
at work or at play

Terriers

Courageous hunters and faithful friends

No fear, no pain,
no game's too rough,
a working terrier
is dog enough!

Toy Breeds

Diminutive, delightful and utterly devoted

A Toy is a toy, a
companion and more,
a treasure, a joy,
and a dog to adore

Non-Sporting

Utility dogs are multi-purpose, companions

No look-alikes here,
but tricks they can do.
Your very best friend
is rugged and true.

Herding Dogs

Pastoral breeds protect and control stock

They move, gather
and faithfully guard
cattle and sheep and
the kids in the yard.

Miscellaneous/Rare Breeds

Often foreign or newly developed

Shower me not
with gems so rare,
give me instead,
a diamond with hair

Primitive

They are types or species more than "breeds"

Old as the dingo,
wild as the wind,
wise as coyote,
Man's very best friend

Alaskan Malamute Dog & Puppy Breed Information

The Alaskan Malamute averages 25” of solid muscle wrapped in a huge wolf-like coat. Capable of pulling a thousand pounds, he requires proper leash training and a steady hand. He is the stuff movies are made of; a loyal, impressive pet for active adults.

The Alaskan Malamute evolved along Kotzebue Sound in what is now Alaska.  Named after a native Innuit tribe, Malamutes predate our history but were used as sledge dogs then and now.  The sport of sled racing may have saved the breed from extinction during the early 1920s, for which movie producers and modern families are grateful!

Alaskan Malamute Coat, Color, Care: This breed has a harsh off-standing guard coat with thick protective undercoat.  His wolfish color ranges from light gray to black or dark reddish black with white underbody.  The Malamute coat is non-matting and easy care except when shedding.  The “hair blizzard” requires rigorous daily combing.

Alaskan Malamute Personality: The Malamute can become overly dominant but properly raised, is an affectionate, friendly dog which, although loyal to his owner, is accepting of everyone.  He gives the appearance of stolid dignity but in private, is playful and inventive with owners.  He tolerates other dogs but due to his size and weight, is best suited for families with older children.

Exercise Requirements: As one would expect, the Malamute requires strenuous exercise to stay mentally and physically fit.  He was bred to work a regular basis.  A Malamute deprived of his genetic heritage will become soft, fat, unhealthy and may become mentally dull or disturbed.

Health Concerns: Health Concerns: Hip dysplasia and luxating patellas (knees) are common with large, fast growing breeds but can be modified by diet and proper exercise.  Eye problems (entropion, ectropion, PRA) and other disorders are considered hereditary and puppies should be from cleared parents.  Allergies, itching, or thyroid imbalance is most often the result of environmental factors, including medication side effects.  A partially home-cooked diet free of preservatives, dyes, and chemicals, supplemented with vitamins and fish oils may prevent or correct such disorders.
