AKC and UKC classify breeds into "groups" by their original purpose.
Northern or Spitz types may eventually be sub-divided.
Explore the Group descriptions below, or choose from the
menu bar above to decide which breed best fits your
lifestyle and interests. If you already know just which breed you prefer, use the drop-down
list of all breeds!

Sporting Breeds

Bird dogs hunt and retrieve by scent and sight

Spaniel or Pointer,
Flusher or Setter,
Sporting dogs are
the hunter's go-getter!

Hounds

Scent and Sight hounds hunt feather or fur

By day or by night,
to tree or to ground,
there's nothing so sweet
as the voice of a hound.

A Toy is a toy, a
companion and more,
a treasure, a joy,
and a dog to adore

Utility dogs are multi-purpose, companions

No look-alikes here,
but tricks they can do.
Your very best friend
is rugged and true.

Herding Dogs

Pastoral breeds protect and control stock

They move, gather
and faithfully guard
cattle and sheep and
the kids in the yard.

Miscellaneous/Rare Breeds

Often foreign or newly developed

Shower me not
with gems so rare,
give me instead,
a diamond with hair

Primitive

They are types or species more than "breeds"

The “American” Cocker Spaniel evolved in England from the English Cocker Spaniel but was developed as its own breed in America.  He has evolved since the 1880’s in type, size and coloring.  His endurance and speed make him a good gun dog able to retrieve and flush game from the field or water or just hanging out in the apartment.

Cocker Spaniel Coat, Color, Care: The Cocker can be solid in color ranging from the lightest cream to the darkest red. Black, brown, and parti-colored (meaning with white) are stunning combinations.  Daily brushing of his silky, medium length hair (flat or slightly wavy) and combing the heavy leg feathering will keep him free of tangles and mats.  Monthly clipping and trimming of feathered legs will enhance the dog’s true lines and keep him neat looking and an occasional bath will keep him from smelling “doggy”.

Cocker Spaniel Personality: One of the smallest sporting dogs, his compact body, refined head, and loving expression make this merry dog a wonderful family pet.  Socialization should begin at a young age as this will help with shyness and prevent snapping or growling.  It will also ensure he will grow up tail waggin’ and playfully happy with everyone he meets.  Sometimes quick to bark at new sights and sounds, he will need obedience/manners training and learn what “quiet” means.

Exercise Requirements: Cocker Spaniels, like all field dogs, need daily exercise and opportunity to stretch out and run.  Long walks in the park are okay but you must have a fenced yard.

Health Concerns: Cockers live approximately 12 to 15 years but may suffer from eye problems such as cataracts, glaucoma and other eye infections.  They may also experience patellar luxation and ear infections.  Allergies, itching, skin problems or thyroid imbalance is often the result of environmental factors, not excluding medication side effects.  A natural (partially home cooked) diet may correct such disorders.
