AKC and UKC classify breeds into "groups" by their original purpose.
Northern or Spitz types may eventually be sub-divided.
Explore the Group descriptions below, or choose from the
menu bar above to decide which breed best fits your
lifestyle and interests. If you already know just which breed you prefer, use the drop-down
list of all breeds!

Sporting Breeds

Bird dogs hunt and retrieve by scent and sight

Spaniel or Pointer,
Flusher or Setter,
Sporting dogs are
the hunter's go-getter!

Scent and Sight hounds hunt feather or fur

By day or by night,
to tree or to ground,
there's nothing so sweet
as the voice of a hound.

Working Dogs

Service work, police, draft, and protection dogs

companion by day,
he does your bidding
at work or at play

Courageous hunters and faithful friends

A Toy is a toy, a
companion and more,
a treasure, a joy,
and a dog to adore

Utility dogs are multi-purpose, companions

No look-alikes here,
but tricks they can do.
Your very best friend
is rugged and true.

Herding Dogs

Pastoral breeds protect and control stock

They move, gather
and faithfully guard
cattle and sheep and
the kids in the yard.

Miscellaneous/Rare Breeds

Often foreign or newly developed

Shower me not
with gems so rare,
give me instead,
a diamond with hair

They are types or species more than "breeds"

Old as the dingo,
wild as the wind,
wise as coyote,
Man's very best friend

Dogue De Bordeaux Dog & Puppy Breed Information
The Dogue de Bordeaux, AKA the Butcher’s Dog, is a French heavyweight averaging 26” and with his pendulous lips and drooling mouth, he can’t be said to be particularly dignified but he is majestic. Dogue de Bordeaux owners consider the ropey slobber a tradeoff for rich history, uniqueness, and intelligence.

The Dogue de Bordeaux is an imposing watchdog.  His great strength and massive head served him well as war dog, guardian, hunter and a fighter used to bait bulls, bears, and jaguars.  Whatever his mysterious origin, he developed in France and was first exhibited in Paris.  The Dogue de Bordeaux is gentle but when he closes his huge mouth and stares, the result is most discouraging to any aggressor.

Dogue de Bordeaux Coat, Color, Care: The coat is short, fine, and soft to the touch.  He is therefore easy to groom despite his size although bathing is best done outside under a hose.  Dogue de Bordeauxs require no special care other than wiping the drool and cleaning the flews for hygiene.  He comes only in plain fawn with black, brown, or no mask, in which case the skin appears reddish.

Dogue de Bordeaux Personality: He’s a gifted guard dog, vigilant without aggressiveness.  Although capable and courageous, Dogue de Bordeauxs should be calm, not easily stimulated.  The male Dogue de Bordeaux can however seek to dominate so does best with an experienced owner.

Exercise Requirements: Despite their laid-back personality, Dogue de Bordeauxs need regular outdoor exercise to keep good muscle tone.  A fenced yard will suffice but the Dogue de Bordeaux enjoys a brisk daily walk and will surely be the talk of the town.  He needs to stretching his legs (and mind) every day to prevent nervous habits such as chewing or licking.

Health Concerns: Health Concerns: Hip dysplasia and luxating patellas (knees) are common with large, fast growing breeds (like the Dogue de Bordeaux ) but can be modified by diet and proper exercise.  Eye problems (entropion, ectropion, PRA) and other disorders are considered hereditary and puppies should be from cleared parents.  Allergies, itching, or thyroid imbalance is most often the result of environmental factors, including medication side effects.  A partially home-cooked diet free of preservatives, dyes, and chemicals, supplemented with vitamins and fish oils may prevent or correct such disorders.
