AKC and UKC classify breeds into "groups" by their original purpose.
Northern or Spitz types may eventually be sub-divided.
Explore the Group descriptions below, or choose from the
menu bar above to decide which breed best fits your
lifestyle and interests. If you already know just which breed you prefer, use the drop-down
list of all breeds!

Sporting Breeds

Bird dogs hunt and retrieve by scent and sight

Spaniel or Pointer,
Flusher or Setter,
Sporting dogs are
the hunter's go-getter!

Hounds

Scent and Sight hounds hunt feather or fur

By day or by night,
to tree or to ground,
there's nothing so sweet
as the voice of a hound.

Working Dogs

Service work, police, draft, and protection dogs

Watchman at night,
companion by day,
he does your bidding
at work or at play

Terriers

Diminutive, delightful and utterly devoted

A Toy is a toy, a
companion and more,
a treasure, a joy,
and a dog to adore

Non-Sporting

Utility dogs are multi-purpose, companions

No look-alikes here,
but tricks they can do.
Your very best friend
is rugged and true.

Herding Dogs

Pastoral breeds protect and control stock

They move, gather
and faithfully guard
cattle and sheep and
the kids in the yard.

Miscellaneous/Rare Breeds

Often foreign or newly developed

Shower me not
with gems so rare,
give me instead,
a diamond with hair

Primitive

They are types or species more than "breeds"

wild as the wind,
wise as coyote,

Originally from Hungary, the Vizsla (means “pointer” in Hungarian) is a medium-sized, short-coated, hunting dog with characteristics from both pointers and retrievers.  His keen nose and endless energy help him to excel in the field.  Other talents of the Vizsla include obedience competitions, agility, and always alert watchdog.

Vizsla Coat, Color, Care: The beautiful rich rust coat is short, smooth, dense, and close-lying.  Sometimes there are lighter shadings over the side of the neck and shoulders that give the appearance of a "saddle".  White on the forechest (as small as possible) and on the toes is permissible.  An occasional brushing keeps him sparkling.

Vizsla Personality: A natural hunter, the Vizsla has a good nose and above-average trainability. He is affectionate, sensitive yet fearless and has a strong protective instinct.  Don’t be surprised if he wants to live in your lap.  Patient, calm, firm handed obedience training and socialization early on to strange people, places, sounds, and animals will help maintain his energy and attitude.

Exercise Requirements: He is packed with energy and stamina so daily jogging, roller-blading, bicycling and plenty of opportunity to run in his fenced yard will prevent nervous habits such as chewing or barking.

Health Concerns: Health Concerns: Vizslas live 12-15 years and are prone to hip dysplasia which is common with large, fast growing breeds but can be modified by diet and proper exercise.  Eye problems (PRA), epilepsy, seizures, skin disease, bleeding disorders and cancer also affect this breed.  Allergies, itching, or thyroid imbalance is most often the result of environmental factors, including medication side effects.  A partially home-cooked diet free of preservatives, dyes, and chemicals, supplemented with vitamins and fish oils may prevent or correct such disorders.
